UEKE (Uelzener Kuhlau-Edition)
Die wissenschaftlich-praktische Gesamtausgabe der Flötenwerke Friedrich Kuhlaus (1786 Uelzen – 1832 Kopenhagen) soll die in verschiedenen Verlagen erschienenen Kompositionen dieses für die Flötistenwelt nicht zuletzt aufgrund seiner außergewöhnlichen Besetzungsvielfalt so besonders wichtigen Komponisten erstmals unter einem Dach zusammenfassen. Leitgedanke ist dabei eine Werkausgabe, die historisch-kritischen Gesichtspunkten im Sinne wissenschaftlicher Exaktheit wie auch musikalisch-praktischen Anforderungen im Sinne fehlerbereinigter Textausgaben optimal entspricht. Entscheidend für den ersten Gesichtspunkt sind die Vorworte und Kritischen Berichte, die jeweils jeder Ausgabe beigefügt werden. Für den zweiten Aspekt ist der Vergleich möglichst aller erreichbaren früheren Ausgaben maßgeblich, wobei die sogenannten Primärquellen in Gestalt der Frühdrucke besonderes Gewicht beanspruchen müssen, da Original-Manuskripte des Komponisten in so gut wie kaum einem Falle erhalten sind, was neben der zeitüblichen Unbekümmertheit der Verleger im Umgang mit den Vorlagen ihrer Autoren auch mit der verheerenden Brandkatastrophe von 1831 zusammenhängt, die den Komponisten existenziell so hart traf, dass er im Jahr darauf verstarb.
Für die Gesamtausgabe gilt grundsätzlich die Arbeits-Maxime des Herausgebers, dass die bisherigen Fehler und Ungenauigkeiten nur noch in den Kritischen Berichten auftauchen, der Notentext jedoch einwand- und zweifelsfrei für die musikalische Praxis zur Verfügung stehen soll.
Ausdrücklicher Dank gebührt der Stadt Uelzen, die diese Gesamtausgabe ermöglicht und damit ihren Ruf als „Mekka“ und „Hauptstadt der internationalen Flötistenzunft“ neben dem seit vielen Jahren durchgeführten Internationalen Flöten-Wettbewerb Friedrich Kuhlau um einen weiteren gewichtigen Eckpfeiler ihres inzwischen weltweiten Renommees als Kuhlau-Stadt aufs Sinnvollste ergänzt.

UEKE (Uelzener Kuhlau-Edition)
Friedrich Kuhlau´s compositions for flute, which have been published by various companies at different times, will be united in a musicological and practical complete edition for the first time. The work of Kuhlau is particularly important for flutists because of the exceptional variety in instrumentation used by the composer. The central theme of this endeavor is to present a series which optimally presents the historical and critical aspects of the piece from a sound musicological perspective as well as providing a musical text for practical use in which all mistakes have been corrected. The prefaces and critical reports which accompany each volume are decisive for the first aspect. For the second aspect, the comparison of as many of the available early editions as possible was decisive. For this we focussed on the so-called primary sources, the early printings. Basically none of the composer´s original manuscripts is available, which has to do with both the nonchalance of publishers in those days as regards the handling of manuscript copy submitted by the authors and with the devastating fire of 1831, which represented such an existential blow to Kuhlau that he died the following year.
For this complete edition, the following work maxim of the editor holds: previous errors and any other imprecision should only be found in the critical reports; the scores which will be presented for musical practice should be flawless and their correctness absolutely certain.
Our express thanks go to the city of Uelzen, Germany, which made the publication of this complete edition possible. Thus, in addition to being considered the “mecca” and “capital of the international guild of flutists” as well as host of the Internationaler Flöten-Wettbewerb Friedrich Kuhlau, another cornerstone has most meaningfully been laid in Uelzen´s international reputation as “Kuhlau´s city”.
