Vorwort

Preface

Friedrich Kuhlau’s B minor trio op. 90, written in about 1826, was published for the first time in 1828 by Schott. Since then various new printings have followed, for example by Schott (1861), Costallat, Billaudot, IMC, and finally in1981 as a reprint of the first edition, again by Schott.

All of these editions suffered and still suffer from one basic deficiency: only the individual parts have been printed, i.e., the corresponding score is missing. Hence, musicians have lacked an important means of controlling their performance together and any notational inconsistencies or mistakes could not be definitively corrected. For this reason Syrinx-Verlag in Detmold published the first score in the series Syrinx Scores in 1988, which – although presented by the editor as an edited facsimile – should be considered the first generally accessible such presentation of the Trio op.90. It was based on a thorough comparison between the first edition and the reprint (Schott FTR 125), the Billaudot edition (B. 13.837), and a handwritten score in the possession of the university of Aarhus, which, however, is exclusively based on the Costallat resp. Billaudot editions and contains no sign whatsoever of any further critical commentary.

In fact, while revising the text we found that some obvious mistakes in the first edition had not been eliminated in subsequent editions, and also that new mistakes and inconsistencies had even crept in, mistakes which had mostly to do with articulation, dynamics, and expression marks but also involved actual notes. In comparing the three individual parts with each other, we were able to correct these mistakes and to finally make a flawless text available. This first volume of the Uelzener Kuhlau-Edition is based on the study score published in 1988 (at that time a new publication of individual parts was not possible for cost reasons).

Thus, a complete, new edition has been presented, a score with the three individual parts. The accompanying revision report, outlining all the corrections which have been made, elucidates and provides conclusive evidence to satisfy the demands of the musicological and critical approach of the new series. At the same time, the score completely fulfills the practical requirements of musical performance.
