Das Duo e-moll op. 10a Nr. 1 erschien 1814 erstmals – gemeinsam mit den Duos Nr. 2 D-Dur und Nr. 3 G-Dur – im Leipziger Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel. Mit diesen drei Kompositionen eröffnete der 28-jährige Kuhlau seine Produktion für das von ihm aus eigener praktischer Kenntnis bevorzugte Blasinstrument, welche aufgrund ihrer allgemeinen Beliebtheit im Laufe der noch verbleibenden 18 Lebensjahre des Komponisten auf über 60 Opera für sieben verschiedene Besetzungsarten anschwoll. Dass die besondere Qualität seiner Schreibweise, nicht zuletzt bezüglich ihrer „Instrumentengerechtigkeit“, sogleich anerkannt wurde, zeigt die Rezension dieser drei ersten Duos in der AMZ, die im Revisionsbericht der vorliegenden Ausgabe zu lesen ist.
Dass die Beliebtheit gerade auch dieser Besetzungsart in der Folgezeit anhielt, zeigt die Vielzahl der Nach- und Neudrucke jener Duos, die in verschiedenen Verlagen erschienen, so bei Mollo/Wien (bereits vor 1828), Farrenc/Paris (bereits vor 1830 sowie bei seinen Verlagsnachfolgern), Litolff/Braunschweig (1875), Peters/Leipzig (1878 und später erneut), Carl Fischer/New York), IMC/New York, Cundy Bettoney/Boston und Ricordi/Milano. Alle diese Drucke kamen, wie auch die Erstdrucke, lediglich als Stimmen-Ausgaben in den Verkehr.
Der Nachteil der Stimmenausgaben ohne Partitur liegt auf der Hand: Weder kann das Zusammenspiel entsprechend genau abgestimmt und kontrolliert, noch können Text-Unstimmigkeiten und -Fehler maßgeblich korrigiert werden, weil neben dem Ohrenvergleich der ebenso wichtige Augenvergleich fehlt.
Um diesem Übelstand, der besonders bei künstlerischen Veranstaltungen wie Wettbewerben etc. zutage tritt, abzuhelfen, bringt die Uelzener Kuhlau-Edition erstmals eine Spielpartituren-Ausgabe des Duos op. 10a Nr. 1 in jeweils zwei Exemplaren pro Edition heraus. Aufgrund dieser Neuerung in der Veröffentlichungsgeschichte der Kuhlau-Duos ist es nunmehr möglich geworden, die bisherigen Mängel zu beheben und auch diese oft als lediglich dilettantengemäß angesehene Besetzungsgattung in den Rang professionellen Musizierens zu heben.

The duo E-minor op. 10a No. 1 was published in 1814 for the first time – together with the duos No. 2 D-Major and No. 3 G-Major – by the publishers Breitkopf & Härtel at Leipzig. With these three compositions Kuhlau, at the time 28 years of age, presented his production for his preferred wind instrument known to him through his own practical experience. Due to its general popularity this production grew to a composition volume of over 60 operas for seven different arrangements during the 18 years remaining to Kuhlau. As it is shown in the review of these three first duos in the AMZ, which can be read in the review report on page 13, the outstanding quality of his writing was immediately recognized, not least because it is true to the instrument.
The popularity of exactly this arrangement that continued in the following years, is proven by the variety of reprints and copies of those duos which appeared by various publishers for example by Mollo/Vienna (before 1828), Farrenc/ Paris (before 1830 including following publishers), Litolff/ Brunswick (1875), Peters/Leipzig (1878 and later again), Carl Fischer/New York), IMC/New York, Cundy Bettoney/Boston and Ricordi/Milan.
All of the mentioned printed material as well as the first appearances in prints only circulated as separate instrumental parts. The disadvantage of part editions without score is obvious: neither the ensemble playing is to be appropriately tuned and controlled, nor text discrepancies and text mistakes are to be definitively corrected, because beside the ear comparison the eye comparison, which is just important as this, is missing. To remedy this evil, which comes up specially at artistic events like competitions etc., the Uelzener Kuhlau-Edition publishes a score edition of the duo op. 10a No. 1 for the first time in each two copies per edition. Based on this innovation in the publishing history of the Kuhlau duos it is possible to remove the previous defects and to lift these often as only amateurish seen instrumentation up to the level of professional performance.
